Thanked: 1Honing services requested
I purchased my first straight razor a couple of weeks ago - a Dovo stainless 5/8". I've had about three shaves with it so far but noticed recently that there was a small ding in the blade edge - a small ripple. I don't remember ever striking the blade on anything but I must have.
I ran it on a Norton 4k for a great deal of time, and it's improved, but it's still there. Being a newbie, I was wondering if a honemeister out there would finish the job for me?

Thanked: 1After getting some advice and not being able to find a honemeister willing to work on a damaged blade, I took it back to the norton 4k. After hundreds of laps, the edge is almost perfect again. There is a small dimple but it's not very noticable.
I still would like a honemeister to make sure it's shave ready.
Incidentally, I figured out what must have happened to it in the first place. The blade kind of veers to one side when you fold it up so I'm sure it dinged one of its stainless scales when I was folding it back up. Grrrr.

Thanked: 150If it shaves, it is shave ready.
Your 4k/8k should be able to bring it back up to speed. You'll learn a lot more this way too, and congrats on getting as far as you have!

Thanked: 150I was just guessing that he did because it would be more likely for a guy in a shaving forum to have purchased the much recommended 4k/8k, then it would be for a guy to show up in a shaving forum with a stand alone norton 4k from some alternate hobby.
But it is very possible that he does not. I guess I was jumping the gun a bit.

Thanked: 1gssixgun has kindly offered his services to get the edge perfect.
I do have the 4k/8k combination stone as well as a 4-sided paddle strop from Tony Miller with 1um, 0.5um pastes and Cr02. I have all the gear I have for now I think but I'm still new and I haven't shaved with a razor that I know has a perfect edge on it. For all the homework I did before buying I wish I had bought a pre-honed razor instead of trying to do it myself right off the bat.

I missed this one entirely, if you want to cover the shipping both ways, I can hone it and send it back often in the same day... Also I'm right around the corner in Central California... so less time in transit.
The setup you have with the TM pasted strops is an excellent choice.
I know Glen's busy, so I don't think he'll mind the hijack, if you haven't sent it, PM or E-mail me, and I'll be happy to get you on the right path.Last edited by Mike_ratliff; 05-30-2008 at 08:37 AM.

Thanked: 13247Mike is absolutely right I don't mind the hijack one bit, he can get to that razor way faster than I can.... So please don't think that you can't change yer mind and get that razor back faster from Mike.... I know I would want it back myself sooner....
