    Hi, Bart.

Why lap under the tap? Rinse away the grit to avoid contamination?

Just trying to get my head around this honing thing and what I need to keep a straight in shave-shape.

When lapping hones flat, with a DMT or with sanding paper on a flat surface, there's usual a massive build-up of debris, coming from the hone being lapped. It gets between the hone and the lapping surface, compromising good contact between those two and slowing down the lapping process. Therefor it's imperative to have some method of rinsing away that debris. With a DMT, it's very easy to take the DMT in one hand, the hone in another and rub them together under a slow running tap.
JoshEarl has put together kind of the final guide to hone lapping, complete with photo tutorials: http://straightrazorpalace.com/basic...ing-101-a.html

    Best regards,
