Thanked: 2209When you have finished with the sandpaper you should, as previously mentioned, place the hone under running water and scrub it with a plastic/nylon scrubber/brush/pad of some sort. The purpose is to remove any embedded grit. Following that the take a blade, any blade, but not your good razor! , and run it over the hone. If there is any embedded grit then it will be noticed.

+1 on the DMT C. I say the heak with sand paper for stone laping. The DMT is the best $55 I have spent on shaving gear. Of corse it would be of no value with out the norton.

Back per buck, the norton flattening stone is still the best investment you can make.
Sure, it's an additional 30$, but it's the nest investment you can do if you hone with a norton.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

I'd say that if your Norton lapping stone is on its way, just wait it out. That will give you the best results with the options you have. Will you not be able to shave without honing until your lapping stone arrives?

Thanked: 271Hi Philadelph. I reached the same conclusion, that it is better to just put the Norton away until the lapping stone arrives. In the meantime, I have a NoxAll barber hone that, followed by a CrO2 pasted strop, seems to work OK. Thanks again to everyone for all the good advice.

I use Easy Off Fume Free to lift contaminants out of stones. As far as the metal is concerned, use the norton flattening stone I sent you. Personally I prefer the DMT 8C for flattening and it does great work on a Norton.
If you're hearing shrieking sounds from your stone, something's wrong. Are you soaking it long enough? What about a slurry?
