    Default Carborundum laping

I found a new Carborundum hone in my grandfathers barber stuff. I have been laping it for about half an hour on my DMT-C and got the center flat. Are these hones normaly this hard. I am used to the norton that is soft and laps fast. I have considered a DMT-XC or sending it to Josh. It does polish like granet comming off the DMT-C I just dont want to wear out the DMT.

Those Carbo's (at least the ones I have) are really hard. I found out the hard way.........I think using a DMT is what I've heard is the best method. Hopefully someone else who has/does successfully lap them will chime in for you....

As long as you're not pressing the carbo hone hard into the DMT and are just accepting that you might need to lap that barber hone in sessions, I don't think you have anything to worry about. That's usually what I do with barber hones, I lap them until I get bored (sometimes only 5-10 minute sessions) and put it down for either later that day or another day. My 3 line Swaty is on this multiple session regimen and another barber hone I picked up called a "Perfect" hone. This Perfect hone is as hard and as silky smooth as my high grit Shapton ceramics. It's got a paper label on the stone and the color of a YG Escher.

IME the barber hones do take the longest to lap.

The carbo's are a pure bear to lap. I am going to order a DMT XCoarse for hard stones to do the bulk of the work.

Thanks for the input. I guess I will just take my time and lap. I have it down to about 3/16" from the edges. Probily have enough flat to hone a razor. I also might put a little more champher on the edges.
Are there any other uses for the DMT-XX then laping hard stones? I would buy one if it had more uses then laping dificult stones.

The DMT XXCoarse isn't good for much else besides lapping, in my opinion. It's about as coarse as a chip-and-tar road surface.

Did you see that thread about lapping on a cinder block? Might be worth a shot. That last bit around the edges doesn't look like much, but it's the hardest part. You've got to lap the whole surface down now, not just a high spot in the middle.
