Thanked: 2209I just have to share...
Hello all,
I went to an auction today and picked up a few hones for $30
There is a blue with a label, The white is actually gray. The small one is green. The other 2 are stamped. And no, they are not for sale.

Thanked: 79Junk, every one of them.
Lucky for you, I will allow you to dispose of them for free. I originally offered 5 bucks, I believe, but as I understand you have a conscience and could not take money from members for such sub-standard hones, I will gladly give the hones a loving home with other unloved, misfit hones I have saved.

Thanked: 2209Good morning!
yes those are 3 Eschers, a 3 line Swaty and a strop back hone.
It was at a auction where the old guy (deceased) had picked up, collected tools for most of his life. There were over 200 handplanes, antique metal lathe's, buck saws, hand saws, wrenches, drill bits, auger bits, electric motors, and boxes, boxes, boxes of stuff. I spotted the hones in one box but I failed to notice 7 old, antique Stanley wood and brass folding rulers, one of which was valuable. So....I had a competitor bidding against me! Boy was I surprised! He ran me up to $50 for that box! So I sold the rulers to a friend for $20. He is a dealer in antique tools.
As soon as I came home I cleaned & lapped all the hone's. I put clear nail polish on the one with the Escher label to protect it. The short greenish Escher is the softest, the greyish Escher is the hardest and the labeled Escher is in between. Now I can try using them and see what the results are.
It was a really good day!Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Thanked: 2209Hello Bud!
It is always fun to try a different hone. This is my second Escher with a label. The other is a blue/green/yellow escher. I have many others without a lablel. Currently I go from a coticule to the escher. The escher gives a finer edge. At least thats the case with the escher I am using now.
As you know, hones can vary a lot.
This particular bunch of hones was a real treat to find. 5 quality hones all at one sale!Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin
