Default By George I've Got It !

I guess I am tooting my own horn here but not without giving credit where credit is due. This is a razor that I picked up off of the bay. It was a buy it now for fifty bucks and the seller lived not far from me. He agreed to meet me at a coffee shop nearby and I paid cash for the Rogers. Although it wasn't mentioned in the description the razor had belonged to his grandfather and the seller was over 60 years old himself. So it is a very old meat chopper with original box and scales. That was the good news. The bad news being the sizable chip in the center of the blade.
Learning to hone has been a long and sometimes frustrating road that went from an obsession to a pleasurable pastime. I happen to be lucky that Topher lives near enough to me that I can drive over to his house. He has been gracious enough to give me what amounts to lessons in honing and stropping. He took a look at the razor and offered to restore it but this was something that I wanted to do myself.

I honed quite a few ebay specials before I tackled this. Once I got to it I started with a D8C to get the chip out. Many roundtrips and hours later I moved to a Norton 1000 to set the bevel and finally to the 4/8.

Took it for a test run and it would shave but was not there yet. Back to the 4/8 and then on to an Escher blue/green and I got one heck of a shave out of it.

I have had a lot of input from Randydance through PMs and over the phone and he helped me a great deal. Topher's real time showing me how he hones has been invaluable. The videos by Lynn and heavydutysquare help a lot but there is nothing like having someone who knows what they are doing showing you in person. This forum as a whole and all of the people in it have given me many hours of study on the fine art of honing, stropping and shaving. Having HAD helped too ....... as much as it hurts. Anyhow, I can hone my own!
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I have three ebay specials that im cutting my teeth on ( , no, not like that), and I cant wait to get where you are now. I have had lots of advice, all of it good, but im a long way from shaving with one of my creations
