Thanked: 22Any high quality Nakayama hone, should remove the 16k Shapton as a favourite honer.
Everyone who has bought a Nakayama hone from me and owned a 16k Shapton, have indicated that the Nakayama is far superior. A few have indicated that a Nakayama hone is better than a 30k Shapton, one of which has replaced the 30k.

I have refrained from writing any sort of full review of the stone I refer to since I have not given it a proper go around in any way. The most significant time I've used it so far, it's been to touch up the edge of a DD Dwarf that I've been using daily for well over a month. I honed that DD initially finishing on a Shapton 16K finished with chromed newspaper and the edge was not only long lasting, it made for a superb shaver. 50 passes on the Asagi (water only) followed by approx 20 passes on chromed newspaper has produced unimpressive results and actually made for a somewhat harsh shave. At this point I will not even allude to it potentially being the fault of the stone. I don't think it is. I think the edge most likely needs some passes on a 12K or even a few on an 8K to get it back up to polishing speed. Clearly this particular stone is not meant for things other than finish polishing and I knew that when I bought it.

Excerpts from: The Report on Honery
Absolutely Andy. Misdiagnoses of HAD is no laughing matter.
...It has been reported that in 83% of cases, misdiagnoses leads to micro-fine paste abuse. While there is no direct evidence to support causality, several studies have linked the abuse to Bristleitis, which has long been known when left unchecked to lead to Chronic Beardification , commonly referred to as ZZ's Disease. Cases in which MachIII intolerance is sited as a contributing factor CB can spread to the nose, ears, neck...
MI, also referred to as Bic Face is the real culprit here. Education is key. In the beginning aggressive therapy is recommended employing a wide variety of therapeutic tools until a baseline well groomed appearance is established. Long term treatment requires a thoughtful, well considered approach. Along with the RDP ( razor diversity program) a standardized set of Hone Compatibility Test should be performed. It is most often confusion over this necessary testing which lead to accusations of HAD.
Often the MI are confronted with opposition within the family while undergoing home therapy. It is sometimes recommended the sufferer seek professional services of a well tipped barber to administer daily shaves until endorsement of home therapy is achieved....
Once dismissed as simple consumerism, haganephilia is gaining wider acceptance in society at large. While the relationship of MI to Carpenterism, Culinarity/ aka Chefitis remains unclear; the meditative, spiritual, artistic aspects of what was once considered pre-industrial drudgery should not be dismissed as mere nostalgia , or romanticism resulting from dissociative reactions to post-post-modern conditions.
While similarities to historical modes remain; adaptation of new technology serves not only to both improve and inform these simple tools, but the person as well. Only the most cursory, dismissive examinations of Honery, Haganephlia have been used by the opposition to label those affected as self-indulgent, obsessed, addictive. However, such literal translations do little to explain and compliment the greater subtleties of the human condition while the figurative use of the transitive verb can readily define the effect on the practitioner utilising this ancient tool in the process of self-actualization.
hone: To perfect. To refine. To improve something with refinements: To bring something to an increased state of intensity, excellence or completion, especially over a period of time.
Viewed in this light restriction or denial of access can be recognized for what it truly is: an attempt to crush the human spirit, halt the advancement of human kind in goals of peace, understanding, compassion for one another...

Thanked: 586For the first time, today I used the entire Shapton series from 1000 all the way to 30k to hone a Wade and Butcher I had cleaned up months ago. It's the top one, the smiler in this shot:
After honing, I stropped it on linen, leather with 0.5 micron paste then finished it on horsehide. I shaved with this razor this afternoon. It was so smooth I wasn't sure I was shaving at all. This is now my best shaver. I payed $6.00 for it at the Elephant's Trunk Flea Market.
