Default Hone with more than 10 months without use

    Hello All,

I have one Norton 4k/8k that was totally flat 10 months ago...

I didn't use it because I was only working with my strops with my currently sharp razors...

I will work again with the stone, does any body knows if I need to lap it again?

    Regards,

    Victor

I would venture to say that it'll still be flat.

    Good luck honing.

Unless you've got an infestation of hone gnomes (sounded better in my head than "gremlins"), it should be good to go.

If she's not flat, you should be able to tell after a few passes and you can worry about lapping then.

    I just gotta ask...
If your stone was flat 10 months ago and you have not used it, why would you consider it to be anything but flat now?

These stones are not solid as natural ones, and in my case Norton glues both hones together, a temperature change can made changes in the glue....

and believe me, if I would be totally sure of the hone changing shape or didnt do it....I would never post the question...hehehe

Your probably ok for flatness. I would refresh the surface by lightly lapping it, 5-10 laps, my refreshing is done with 1000 grit, soften the edges and rinse under running water to get all the loose stuff off. Thats what I do before each honing session.

    Hope this helps,

Do you only lap your Norton after soaking the 4K side?

I am guessing that there may be some intricacies going on inside a synthetic stone after they are soaked that may affect the planarity. Not certain, just a guess.
