    Default Shapton Results.....WOW!!!

    Ok..

So last week i took a bite and bought the 4k/8k/16k shaptons. Now I had a 220/1k 4k/8k Norton....Yellow Coticule...and an Escher. I must say..that after giving the shaptons a go for a week...all I can say is WOW. They are really quick cutters and provide me with great edges so far. I find them far easier to use than the Nortons. While it doesnt have the feel of the Coticule while honing, the 16K gives me a great edge.

Anyone that has been on the fence about getting them...let me say...I think they were great..and in fact..I wouldve started out with these..instead of the Nortons.

Your Shapton results don't surprise me. They're great stones. I'm puzzled then as to why you titled your thread: "Odd Shapton results"?

I agree, different feedback between the coticule and a Shapton 16K. That said, I like the "click......click........click" of the razor on the 16K. I think if I were able to translate the Shapton ceramic on glass language, the 16K would be saying: "sharp!......sharp!.......sharp!".

I used the Odd Shapton Result as a grabbing title. but i did find it odd/suprised i had such great success right out of the box. IM really impressed. I really dont get the click click on the 16k....what im referring to is the quickness of the feel as opposed to the coticule.

    Its great stuff

One thing here that we need to start saying and clarifying is that most of the people that are buying the Shapton's are the more experienced honers here..... These are not "wonder stones" you still have to do yer part, I love them, and yes they work great, but the honing stroke is still what makes them work, as with any stone...... Just a small word of warning before some new guy spends huge money on the Shapton system, and finds out that they still have to "LEARN" to hone......

That being said, yes if I knew then, what I know now, I would have started with the Shapton's

Good point, Glen. I don't consider myself an experienced honer, I do consider myself a poor sap with HAD that have/has OWNED most of the stones we use though! That aside, I agree with you that the Shaptons don't hone your razors for you by any stretch. Technique is needed first, middle and last. Since these lower grit stones remove metal quickly, with bad technique, a person can overdo things before they know it. And, even though I consider a "starter set" (maybe 4K, 8k, 16k) to be reasonable for a new person, no question the full set is out there in cost. Then, throw in the GDLP, aaaaaarrrrgghhhh!

What is it you think that makes them easier to use?

The 16K is a very hard very smooth ceramic. The "click" sound is the sound my razors make when the spine sets down on top of the stone just prior to making a pass. That's all.
