Thread: Sandpaper honing; how?

Keep in mind, as Randydance told me once when we were discussing this topic, sandpaper has a much higher concentration of grit than natural or synthetic hones. This results in much faster cutting. Lynn Abrams has noted that he has seen more razors messed up from improper honing on sandpaper than any other way ..... IIRC. So if you are a novice take it easy if you are going to use sandpaper to hone your razors. Just IMHO.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 1I did this exact thing the first few weeks i got into the idea of straight shaving. i found that the spray glue isn't entirely necessary and usually just having a weet surface and keeping the paper wet will keep it sticking. You probably won't be able to find high grades in a hardware store but definitely in a hobby shop i got mine at hobby lobby for about five bucks a pack. Something i think that should be mentioned. be very aware and careful of how you hold you razor. Hang the tang off the edge of the glass or granite or what ever you can get ( i stole a mirror tile from work thats used for a table centerpiece lol)This method definitely does work just be very careful and go SLOW! My poor tuckmar has quite the wear on the tang and it happened really quickly. On another note. If you have any kind of a flea market or antique mall or store go there...alot! i found my belgian yellow and blue combo at my local antique mall for five bucks! Thats what finally got me away from this method and there's a world of difference in the smoothness of the edge. The sandpaper will make it sharp but it will bite you if you're not careful. With the coticule it really feels like it glides on my skin better.
