I lapped my 12k on 800 grade wet and dry but then I just like pain.............
I don't know if some are soft and some hard. Mine is like glass and I thought it would never get flat but it did and I haven't had to do it again since!

Thanked: 2209Since there is such a great variation in coticules and escher/thuringan/german water razor hones and japanese naturals then it would not be surprising to see variation in the chinese 12k stones. Mother nature is rarely static.
Just my two cents,
BTW, I was at a Gun show today and found 6 razors for $30 total.
3 were exactly the same, 4/8 Spike with single concave grind, really good shavers, and one Boker 5/8 with a shoulderless grind. It was a good day.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Thanked: 3795In peril of a thread hijack, what do you mean by a single concave grind?

Thanked: 1I'll help to get us back on track. I just got my 12k from woodcraft. I was elated to find there was a retail store about 20 min from me. They did mention that the price was going up about $3 next week FWIW.
Tuesday UPS will be delivering my D8C and a D8EE. I'm going to attempt to flatten my 12k with the D8C. Would it be ok to finish it on the D8EE? By that, I mean...would it both finish out the 12k and break in both DMT stones?

I just ordered Chi12K and Norton lapping stone. I have a D8EE at home. I'll post my results with pics here.

I received my new 12k today. I layed out the pencil grid, lapped it with the Norton lapping stone, took about 10 minutes. It stuck to the glass very nicely and all the pencil was gone. Then I lapped it with the DMT8EE. Took out the roughness and made it beautiful. Total time: 20 minutes.

Seems all the answers are here.
I'll just add I got my glass base out of an oven door. Nice hard tempered glass.
Also I use fine, valve grinding paste for lapping. Don't know if my Chinese stone is hard or soft but the SiCarbide doesn't seem to care. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
