Honing lesson and Thanks
I was going to send Randy (randydance062449) a PM but decided to post instead. He gave me a lesson in honing the other week and was a super razor geek host and teacher. Randy drove home the point of keeping track of the edge as you go along. Paying attenion and testing as I go has moved my honiing up a level. Here is what I was going to pm him.
Randy,
The problem razor that you honed for me works well. I gained some valuable insight into keeping track of what I am doing/honing by using the thumb test/visually examining the edge. Paying attention to the way the thumb test feels and the way the edge looks as honing progresses has moved me up a level in my honing. It is a much better than my previous, (hone-try to shave-repeat as necessary) method.
Charlie
Thanks Randy

Thanked: 335Hmmm, check the edge, hone, check, hone, check. Check, I got that from Randy too. He's a pretty good resource and makes some downright fine spaghetti too. Did you notice the sharpened tines on the forks? 12K, Escher I think.

Thanked: 2209Good morning guys!
It was good having you to my place and I hope we can do it again!.
I have been meaning to make a post about Spazola's visit but events have overtaken my time.
Charlie... I did hone up that Frameback and it went pretty easy. I will be shave testing it in a couple of days. The edge feels and looks really good.
Bruce....those tines were done on a Tam O'Shanter! The difference is obvious!
Of course, I am flattered that you noticed.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

fantastic randydance, hats off to you for showing him some tips, lots of guys are getting into straights now, gillette better look out and start doing throwback razors if they want to keep any of their customer base, lol it really helps to recieve advice from someone that that has lots of experience at it, small honing clinics throughout the country would be cool, just a couple of hours with someone with experience will set you straight and eliminate the errors one makes that wipes out an edge in a few strokes

Randy helped me a great deal on the telephone and in a number of PMs. The Topher also showed me a great deal in person and got me headed in the right direction. My sincere thanks to both gentlemen.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
