    Default Can it be fixed?

So I know where there is a really nice Hess available at an antique store. I've looked at it several times, but have not been able to bring myself to buy it because it has uneven hone wear. Not from heel to toe, but one side compared to the other. Can this wear be evened out by giving one side many strokes on a lower grit stone and then setting a new bevel once the sides are more even? Has anybody tried this successfully?

Disclaimer: I'm new to honing, so I think about stuff like this.

Do you mean the one side has a wider bevel than the other????

I don't remember for certain, but I would assume so because there is a lot more metal on one side as opposed to the other. It's been awhile since I looked at it. I think it was either a 42 or a 44 with that 'Frozen Tempered' goldwash.

What it boils down to is whether or not you'd be happy with the razor.

You could possibly hone one side more than the other until the bevel evens out, but it wouldn't be necessary. Almost any blade can be rehoned and used, even if the sides have an uneven hollow grind (which is the usual cause of uneven bevels).

I'd go for it, but it's up to you.

You could always pick it up, try it out, and resell it if it doesn't suit you.

edit: there are also guys who can do a regrind on the blade to even it out, if that interests you.

Yeah, I may have to get it if it's still there. It's a looker. Of course, if one of you Minnesota boys already got to it let me know so I don't have to make the drive.
