Thread: Shapton 1K or 2K Glass Stone for Bevel Setting?

I've decided to buy some Shapton glass stones, but I'm still a little ambivalent about what to do on the lower grit stones. I plan on working on factory razors and relatively clean ebay razors. I don't intend to do any serious resurrections at this point, just cleaning up a raggedy edge or honing out a small smile. For these purposes would the Shapton 1K or 2K be more appropriate. I plan on purchasing the 4K, 8K, and 16K stones as well, and I'm not sure if I do go for the 1K that the 2K will be necessary before the 4K. In other words can I jump from the 1K to the 4K?

I use almost the exact same set up, 1-2-4-8-16 Shaptons
The only thing I add to that set up is for really tuff razors I have the Norton 220/1k..... I learned how to correct really bad bevels on the Norton 1k and it is just a comfort thing for me personally, I don't think it is necessary at all, and you can use the 1k or 2k Shapton for bevels no huge difference there.... of course this is JMHO

I have the Shapton pros in 1k, 2k, 5k, 8k, 12k, 15k, and 30k. I find the 1 &2 useful for redoing a raggedy edge. I start with the 1 and move on to the 2 ASAP. You could get by fine with one or the other but it is another arrow in the quiver. I also have a DMT D8C which is useful for removing larger chips and for lapping.

Well, I have the 2k,4k,8k and 16k progression in the Shapton glass hones and I'm quite happy with them. I have been debating on picking up a 1k and possibly a 500 grit as I do run into the occasional blade that needs a lot of work but as I already have other options such as the DMT 1200 grit and an old 1k Japanese stone (probably a King, I can't remember anymore) and of course my sheets of micro abrasives from Lee Valley, I really have a hard time justifying the cost of those Shaptons for me. Some day I'll get them, most likely in hopes that they might speed up the rough work but I only do 2 or 3 such razors in a year if I can't stay away from Ebay that it's hardly worth the extra cost. For my rotation razors, 8k and 16k are the only two I generally use.
