if you can lay the entirety of the blade on a truly flat surface, the blade should be absolutely
flat, if you can see the blade curl up or down, you have a warp. It will look either like a frown or a smile, with light being observed coming beneath the blade where the metal does not lie flat. spine and edge must lie flat.It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Thanked: 150If you look down the length of the blade, from toe to heel, you should not be able to detect any side-to-side warping.
The CD thing works, but if the blade has a smile/frown it will be misleading because those areas will not touch the CD but won't be the result of a warp, just the curve of the blade's edge.

Thanked: 150We were typing at the same time, I think, I didn't intend to correct you.
I just prefer smiling blades, and it's a test that I do to make sure the blade is just smiling, not warped.

Thanked: 286Thanxs for the info i find most blades slightly curl at the heel and toe and don't touch the hone so i take it that is normal in most cases.
