    Default buying that first hone...

So, I've been doing some research about buying my first real hone. I want something that I can use to maintain razors, and put an edge on old vintage razors that haven't been honed in 40+ years. I'm on a fairly tight budget, so at this point I just want to buy one or two hones. Right now I'm thinking about going with the DMT D8EE, and finishing with a chromium oxide pasted strop, or with a fine idahone hone, if it turns out to be worthy of this. Any feedback or advice on this would be appreciated..

I don't currently have any stones to Lap with, so I'm currently decided against the Norton 4k/8k...

The D8EE and chrome oxide make up a very usable "no lapping" solution. Add an inexpensive barber hone (lap it) just in case you are among those who don't like a chrome oxide edge.

I have successfully lapped quite a few hones on a free concrete block.

I have no experience with the Idahone. Might replace a good barber hone (once you make sure it's flat).

Where does one get a barber hone?

If I purchase one of the more coarse DMT's like the D8C, would that be sufficient for lapping?

Barber hones can be found on eBoy or, my preference, local antique stores.

Many, myself among them, use the DMT D8C for lapping (use light pressure and plenty of water/rinses.). Works great.

good choice check the threads to see if you need to break in the 8k dmt with a kitchen knife though, i dont remember if u have to or not, i know you ned to break in a dmt 1200 hone like thatseveral guys here use the dmt 8k here and seem to like it, you can get a good barber hone like a swaty for not too much they are a really good barber hone kink
