Shapton stones for entire honing process??
Hey everyone,
I currently only have a Norton 4000/8000 waterstone, but am making up my Christmas wishlist... I am really interested in the Shapton line of glass stones, especially since they have the whole range of grits. What I was thinking of getting in my "ultimate honing setup" is the Shapton 1000, 4000, 8000, and 16000 grit glass stones, the stone holder, and the DGLP for lapping them. The is a very attractive setup for me simply because it's all of the same type of stone, so it's consistent.
Would this be a good setup? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for your input!

Thats a pretty nice setup. I have the exact same thing minus the DGLP and 1k stone for now. Ill be getting the DGLP soon enough.

Yes, that is a nice progression. I prefer the Shapton Professionals but the GlassStones are first rate.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

That's a good list. I have the 2K,3K,6K,8K and 16K Shapton glass hones as well as the DGLP. The Shapton glass hones are a great system.
The DGLP is worth every penny. It really makes a big difference in how the hones "feel" if you lap them just a few strokes before each use.
There are still some razors that respond to natural stones better than the Shapton's, for those cases, I have an Escher as well as a coticule. For the most part though, you'l be very happy with the Shapton system.

Thanked: 1I just received my 6K, 8K and 16k Shaptons with lapping plate.
Did 2 razors and what a difference. Didnt even need many strokes. But I did lap my stones first before I used them. They were off a bit so I am glad I did that.
I also have a 4K/8K Norton and a 1K Global for my dirty work.
So far I am very pleased with them.
