i will agree pretty much completely with glen,so i will add my tuppence worth too....i use a steich-reimen paddle strop with all my razors with .50 and leather, this works great however before I had hones i bought a tony miller 4 sided paddle with the four different pastes 3.0,1,0.5 & .25. I guess the cost of the paddle was the thing for me initially plus it gave me a great deal of stropping practice. I have a couple of razors still that have never touched a hone and they shave great.I will say when budget is an issue this is a far less painful option.

On a norton overhoning is possible but caution will look after this, shaptons are exspensive and very nice so coticules are a great idea also.i always believe that price is always an issue ( cos Im scottish) but the info on this thread will assist you greatly, enjoy your learning and you cant go wrong.

happy honing, simon
