Thread: How long will a Norton 4k/8k Last?

How long will it last if only used to keep up three razors?

Probably a lifetime for 3 razors.

I'm thinking of getting a Norton 4k/8k, some 1micron diamond paste and 0.5 Cro to keep my small fleet going.

That and a strop and you ought to do just fine.

With only 3 razors, it will last more than a lifetime.

The real question though, Dups, is not how long a Norton will last for 3 razors, but how long you can last with just 3 razors!

That's a hard question to answer as your flattening (lapping) of the stone may take more or less of the stone away. The other variable is whether or not you keep your razor sharp (less use of the stone) or wait until your razor gets dull and then sharpen it (more use of the stone and both sides as well).

I reckon it will last about as long as it takes you to start understanding the priciples. And then you'll start dreaming of Shaptons and DMTs, to coticules and Eschers, and oh all sorts of hones, as your 3-blade collection grows and is joined by ebay specials you wish to restore and you embark on the search for the perfect edge.

I give you a year.
