Thread: A "honing resistant" razor

It sounds like the TNT is passd as long as this result is consistant all along the blade. If its popping arm hairs, which it sounds like it is, it would be time to move up and start with a pyramid on the 4/8k.

Thanked: 1Do i have to do TPT when honing on the 4000 grit stone and HHT on 8000 ?
Edit: Ooops, corrected TNT to TPT.Last edited by kekon; 11-27-2008 at 03:32 PM.

Don't forget the TPT! I actually like it better than HHT. Just be cautious.

I can whip a straight around my face like it's a race track, but I cringe like a coward when it comes to the TPT. I just can't do it. I substitute shaving arm hair, instead. There's a certain "feel" that it has to pass as it's shaving off the arm hair, and it has to do it along the entire blade. Of course the wife giggles at all the bare spots on the arms...

Thanked: 1I think that the bevel in my razor is still not good... I just cant pass TPT
But... i discovered very strange thing... My grandfather gave me his old razor. It has EXTREMELY HUGE crack so it's undoubtly beyond repair. The crack is in the middle of the razor. Only one part of the blade is not affected (it occupies only 25% of the blade length). It was completely without any bevel. I started to create the bevel on the 1000 hone. It took only 30..50 strokes and the razor passed TNT very well (much better than the razor i written about at the beginning of this thread). Then i switched to 4000 grit and did about 30 strokes. Now i did TPT and also it passed very well - the blade cut into the skin with ease; i nearly cut myself. Because i didn't have 8000 grit hone now i stropped the razor directly after honing on 4000 (about 30 strokes). Then i did HHT and... passed the test ! How is it possible ? Of course i didn't try to shave with this damaged razor. The only explanation to this can be the fact that this damaged razor has much better bevel set than my new one which i still can't manage to sharpenLast edited by kekon; 11-27-2008 at 07:30 PM.

The TNT tells you the bevel is set. The TPT is a measure of sharpness. I find that there is little "pass" or "fail" in the TPT it is a progression from one feel to another. Over time you learn to tell what is sharp enough to shave with as the TPT changes while you hone.
The old razor probably did have a better bevel than your other one. The HHT isn't a reliable test of sharpness, I find though that it feels different off the 4000 than the 8000 though it can pass off of either.
