Thanked: 2Lapping, how much stone is wasted?
I was wondering, does lapping waste much of a stone like a Shapton 16k or 3ok? over say 2 or 3 years of use. just wondering.
I was thinking of getting both, but was thinking about how long these stones would last.

Refreshing these stones takes very little off the stone. They would last you years with low to moderate use and shouldn't be something you'd need to worry about as a cost factor.

I agree with Chris. I have had my Shaptons for at least 7 or 8 months and lap each stone a few laps every time I hone and haven't noticed any wear at all. Longevity should be several years at the least.

I strongly agree with all the former posts. I use the DGLP on my Shapton's EVERYTIME I use them.IMO, the increase in the performance of the hone far outweighs the very minor wear that occurs.

I look at it as none is wasted. The stone has to be flat enough. It's not using the most of the flat that wastes stone- excessive wear along a single path i mean

kevin is right on the money here.
even if you take a lot of material off the stone, you aren't wasting it... the stone just plain isn't useful unless it's flat. i look at lapping as maintenance. would you say that honing a razor into useful sharpness is wasting the metal?

The very first time a stone is flattened would be the most wear depending on how out of flat it is. Once flat the pencil grid you apply is minuscule and that is all that is removed to maintain it. Not anything to worry about. The stone's useful life then depends on how many razors you hone. Lynn has gone through a few but he has honed thousands of razors. For most of us a stone will still be useful after we are gone.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

i think jimmy hit the nail on the head unless you would hone a large amount of razors in a year a thousand or so i dont think you would wear one out in your lifetime, all you will be doing with them is touch ups on your shaving razors id say at least 10 to 15 years with moderate use maybe more
