Good 1000 Grit Honing Stone?
Hello!
Could anyone advise me on a good 1000 grit honing stone?

I have a 1.5K not for export Shapton that I like. They are not the same as the ones you buy outside of Japan.

Another vote for the Shapton. At $43 Shapton GlassStone Waterstones I think it is a good buy. Free shipping.

I've got the Norton, the Shapton Pro, and the DMT D8E 1200K. Having used all three for awhile if I could only have one it would be the diamond plate.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 3164The King 1000 has always worked well for me - it has a good feel, doesn't wear down too quickly and is fast. And cheap! It comes on its own, as a 250/1000 combo or a 1000/6000 combo.

Neil

Thanked: 95The DMT D6E 1200 grit works very well for me, and it don't need any lapping, just a short break in period.

the DMT 8E is probably one of the fastest 1200 grit hones on the market.
I do find the DMT to leave deep scratches and prone to mico-chipping on some steel.
The Shapton 1000 is great but not coarse enough for some of the tougher steel out there. The Shapton 500 covers that gap. Also compared to the DMT the scratches left by the Shaptons are extremely smooth, uniform and not as deep.
Both will serve you well. It will mostly depend on your budget, if you'll end up setting many bevels, honing lots of razors and having to deal with all the different steel and grinds used.

Thanked: 13245You might want to take a look at the set right here that Ronnie just found

Having not used the DMT for most of the reasons about the deep scratches I can't answer for that hone... But I seem to find myself going to the Norton 1k for restoration more than even my beloved Shapton...
That set for $99 is a great deal..

I really really really like the Shapton 1000 for straight razors and I really like the DMT1200 for anything.
