Default Friodur on a Blue Coticule

    OK fellas here's my question.

I'm trying to establish a bevel on my Friodur. It wasn't very dull to begin with that's why I went to the Blue first.

Under the micro the edge looks great. I can pull it over my thumbnail and it's smooth with the feeling like it will dig in if I try a bit harder. I can shave hairs on my arm but it won't pop a hair when tried passing over the hair. It also won't pop a hair if I pass one over the blade.

Do I need to keep making passes until I can pop the hairs easily?

    Thanks,
    Randy

I like to have it where it will pop hairs without touching the skin below the hair. Once the bevel is set don't run the edge over your thumbnail anymore. When the razor digs into your thumbnail it should be good to continue honing and testing but use the thumb pad test TPT. The TNT (thumbnail) can dull it. To really know that you have a good bevel it is good to have magnification. An eye loupe or microscope will tell you if you have any micro chipping and if the bevel is correct and not doubled or worse.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanks Jimmy. I had a chance to go back and finish up on the Friodur.

I did laps on the blue and a slurry until I had hairs popping. The part I had questions about is how much the hair will pop on my arm.

The hairs would occasionally pop depending on how they were laying and catching the blade.

Once I had some more consistent results I moved up the scale, yellow, then 16K Shapton and finally some CrO2.

I then stropped a bit and ran the blade over my arm once again.

It's very different when the blade is sharpened and stropped blade where passing it just above the skin yields a harvest of hair, as opposed to the occasional hair grabbing and popping.

    Tomorrows shave will tell.

    Thanks again,
    Randy
