Thanked: 2honing help for new razors.
I am just after getting my first 3 str8 razors, 2 basic new Dovo's (a 101 4/8 and a similar 5/8) and a e-bay Gillotts '1st prize' for honing practice.
The hones I've got are: King 1k/6k combo, Spyderco fine, Belgian yellow, a Muller Thuringian and a Chinese 12k.
The problem is that the new ones are sharp but not shave ready and the e-bay razor while in good condition (blade straight even etc) seems a lot less sharp. I probably send the 5/8 for pro sharpening but would like to get started with the other two. I've tryed the e-bay one on all the hones without success, starting with the Belgian yellow and then going back to the 1k without improvement.
Would the 1k be Ok to try set the bevel on the e-bay razor and then try and move up to the 6k etc.
I know that you guys are probably tired of newbie problems but any help would be appriceated.
Happy Christmas and New Year!
PS I dont have a strop yet, but I'll get a good leather belt until I get the strop.

Set your bevel with the 1k then go 6k , yellow, thuringian. If you dont get the bevel set properly, all is in vain! You may get away without using the 1k. Once the bevel is set you should be popping arm hairs the rest is to smooth out the edge.
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain
