Norton Prices
Hey all, sorry to keep flooding the hones forum but I have a lot of questions.
Now that I've pretty much decided what to buy, I'm looking at prices...the Norton combination runs pretty pricey, but then I found this page:
Craftsman Studio.
The 4000/8000 for $68 sounds good, but they also have the set of 220/1000 and 4000/8000 for 103. If this is the same set they have on Amazon, it includes a flattening stone, and for $103 (free shipping in the lower 48 for orders over $75), that sounds like a good deal as some sites are charging $100 just for the 4000/8000.
Does anyone know of any better deals, or if this site is perhaps not on thye up-and-up? I'm suspicious...If it sounds too good to be true...
But it IS a pretty good price. It appeals to the cheapskate in me.Last edited by JimR; 12-28-2008 at 11:25 AM.

craftsman has the best prices on the web that I have found so far.
Another place with good prices is The Perfect Edge
But if I may make a suggestion: if you can spare the money, buy a DMTD8C for flattening and refreshing the surface of your norton. It leaves a much smoother honing surface than the norton flattening stone, and more to the point: it stays flat. The norton flattening stone doesn't.
Craftsman also sells DMT at very good prices, so in your case I'd buy the 4/8 + DMTD8C.
If you later decide you also want to hone damaged razors or ebay razors with a busted edge, you can buy an additional norton 1K or DMT1K.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Well, there shouldn't be any import taxes on something less than 20,000 yen. I would have the goods shipped to my mother and then she can use the cheapest shipping to Japan...it shouldn't be more than $30, unless a single stone weighs more than three pounds?. But as for the full set up for less money, I'm confused. The prices I've found for suehiro stones haven't been that good...I guess I haven't found the best prices yet. I'm still just looking. I haven't found an #8000 stone for less than 4,500 yen...
With current exchange rates, importing things isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. But like I said, I'm just shopping around, checking prices. I've always found it a good idea to consider all the options.

I also looked on the net and found cheaper combinations, but they didn't ship outside the US, so i found an Australian seller.

AMAZON
Check out amazon.com I just purchased a set that has the Norton 220/1000, 4000/8000, and the Norton flattening stone + instructions for $119.43 +S&H. Great deal since i have seen just the 4000/8000 for @ $120 at some other places. Also Lee Valley, leevalley.com is a touch pricer but not too bad
