Default 100% Mineral oil - Paraffinol, safe on SS?

    Hi gents,

I have at home a bottle of SKYDD mineral oil bought from IKEA, ment for treating wooden surfaces for preparing and serving food. It says on the label: 100% Mineral oil - Paraffinol.

It is very thin, and completely colorless, like wather.

Is it safe to use it on the StainlessSteal Blade, as any regular light machine oil???

    thanx

Mineral oil should be fine on anything. I use it on my sharpening stones. But why do they use the term pariffinol ? To me that looks like liquid pariffin, which can turn gummy over time. At least it did for me when mixed with mineral oil and used as a honing oil. As far as staining blades, I don't know if anyone has ever mentioned having a problem with any oil that way. Stainless still is far more corrosion resistant than carbon steels, but it can still rust. I use Camellia oil from Japan Woodworker on all my razors that are not used frequently to prevent corrosion. I use plain mineral oil on my oilstones for sharpening. I DO NOT use liquid paraffin on anything any longer.

I dont know if it is liquid paraffin. The label is 100%mineral oil, and in the DE, NL, SE, and some other languages after the Mineral oil stands Paraffinol, or parafinne-olie??

In the UK, "paraffin" translates into "kerosene"(USA)

Ok, just did some research. I am such an idiot. Mineral Oil is made from petroleum and based on 2 different types. Naphthenic and Parafinnic. Naphthenic has a higher viscosity and is used where ability to withstand high heat is required. Parafinnic (or I'm guess Paraffinol Mineral Oil in your case) is of a lighter viscosity and is used where heat is not a factor such as cosmetics. So that should work as well as any mineral oil for your razor(s) I would think.

I use mineral oil on all my razors' blades. I have had no problems from it.

I really like mineral oil because:
    1) It's irritation free. Now you'll read various places online that it can cause pimples by clogging the skin. That's probably true for some people (and probably large amounts of mineral oil). But in my experience the tiny bit that gets rubbed off a razor onto your skin, and then immediately shaved off gets no chance to clog your pores.

    2) It's cheep and easy to get. The thicker kind is sold as a laxative at your local supermarket for cheep. Cheep Baby oil is also just mineral oil, and some scent, as is cheep hair dressing.

    3) It works. It's clear, it prevents rust, and you can shave with a razor who's blade is covered in it. What more could you want from an oil?

I was in a Linen and Things chain store the other day and in the kitchen department they have a thin mineral oil for treating wooden cooking tools and cutting boards. A 12 or 16 oz bottle was $4.99. Should be a lifetime supply...........for the whole gang of us
