To answer your question, and this is what I did, since I didn't bother to ask advice when I bought mine. I got the 5k coz 1-5-8 doesn't seem to be as big of jump as 1-3-8 would be.

You could always do 1-3-5-8. Others may suggest 1-2-3-5-6-7-8-10, but them people have serious HAD.
What, no 16 or 30? Sounds pretty weak to me.

I think you're right about the 5--when looking at sets, I see far more 1-5-8 sets than 1-3-8, the jump does seem less there.
