How low should I go?
If all of my razors had their bevels established by honemeisters, can I get by with my current honing setup?
DMT D8EE
Chinese 12K
Chromium Oxide
I know that many other members have 1000 & 4000 grit hones, but if I only need to refresh the edges and not create bevels, are the lower ones really necessary?

Yes. Don't forget to lap and chamfer the edges on the 12k.
If you chip a razor or start buying vintage ones, you might want to add something around 1200 mesh (only if you find the D8EE to be too slow for the job at hand).Last edited by Sticky; 01-20-2009 at 10:24 PM. Reason: added "lap and chamfer"

As long as your blade isn't abused or is let to dull considerable, that setup sounds fine with me. What you have is solely for touching up blades, but if all you have are razors that are honed by honemeister, than you should be fine

Nope, your setup just won't do. You'll need a Shapton 1k, 4k, 8k, and 16k just to squeak by. To be properly setup, though, you should really have a coticule, a BBW, and a few of the Japanese stones I can't spell or pronounce. Note that this *should* just barely get you by.
(Please feel free to print this post and show it to your wife before your next stone purchase.)

For touch ups, I've been getting by with just my Honemaster barber hone for about a year now. I'd totally forgotten that my Norton needs lapping until I needed to hone a new razor.
