Thanked: 1Can I Maintain w/ a 16k & 30k?
Good Evening Guys...
Would like to know if it is out of the question to pick up a Shapton or two to use for maitinance and learning to hone.
Looking at the 16k and 30k to use on my Dovo Special that I received for xmas. I will be in San Diego tomorrow and cant resist going by the Craftsman Studio. And I know what will happen when I get there.
Thanks, Boyd

If it was my $$ I would pass on the 30K for now and get a 4k, 8k, a 16k and a DMT continuous diamond plate D8C to lap the stones.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2209I agree with Jimmy. That would be far more bang for the bucks.

Thanked: 1If just using for maintinance would I go down that low? I figuer I have a month or two left on my D Special, so can I polish up with a 16k?
Dont get me wrong I'm hitting the classifieds 10 times a day and see the usefullness down the road. I'm just unclear the day I dont get a good shave, can I go 16? I'm golden on stropping (I assume), getting great shaves still every other day.
Thanks again...

Thanked: 2209Relying on just a 16K to perform touchups would eventually fail. Then you would need either the 8K or the 4K.
My most used hone is the Norton 4/8 and of those 2 the 4K gets the most work.

Thanked: 13245The Shapton's tend to be slightly more aggressive then other stones of the same grit, but the 16k / 30k combo is not enough.... cutting power...
The 4k 8k 16k set would be more than enough for everything but total restorations....and if you went with the setup Jimmy lined out for you I guess you could re-cut a bevel on the DMT
