Thanked: 2209One of the things I discovered is that the Norton stones and other hones benefit from being "refreshed" before each honing session and during the honing session. What happens is the surface of the hone becomes clogged with the "swarf" of the hone and/or the abrasive grains become "rounded" or less effective.
Refreshing a hone is nothing more that lightly lapping the hone with a 1000 grit hone/sandpaper/what have you under running water (5-10 laps). Then use a brush , again under running water to remove any loose/embedded grit.
It is highly unusual for a Norton 4K hone to fail to develop a bevel . The DA is a piece of cake to hone unless the blade is warped. Same holds for your other razors.
It sounds to me like your honing stroke/technique is off . Are you using the heel leading X pattern honing stroke?
Do you watch the flow of water in front of the edge as you hone?
Refresh your hones, use the magic marker on the bevel, perform 50 laps on the 4K using moderate pressure for the first 25 laps and light pressure for the last 25 laps. Keep the hone wet when honing. Use the X pattern stroke and watch the water flow in front of the edge. You should notice a major change in the sharpness of the edge and all the magic marker should be gone.
I will follow this thread and maybe we can work this out. There is always an answer.Last edited by randydance062449; 01-24-2009 at 09:27 AM.
