When I first got back into straights (twenty years after trying and failing) I bought a C-Mon and a Puma on ebay. I had a strop and I used it on them and shaved with them. I did alright down my cheeks but when I got to the chin and mustache it was no go. I put them away and about that time discovered SRP.

I have an old 30X B&L binocular microscope that I use to check my tattooing needles for blunt or hooked points. It had never occurred to me to check the edge of a straight razor with it. When I read about the advantages of magnification on SRP I took that C-Mon and that High Class Puma and examined them. I can't recall exactly what they looked like a year later but it wasn't pretty.

Maybe younger eyes then mine can really see the progress of the bevel through the progression, or such things as micro chipping but for me the magnification is as important as the hone. YMMV.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    ... Idon't know

but if the razor is sharp and the bevel is set; then one side being off via differential sharpening would only need different shave angles.... until things were so off that the SA became un reasonable or, yeah: impossible.

I always thought honing would tell you.(on a flat stone) ... If the bevel needs to be caught up, and then you concentrate on an x length section, then light that bevel up; one often sees the glitch in the transition

all I know to do is catch up and blend
