What kind of a sound is it?
I JUST finished honing a blade from start to finish, so I worked on the norton 4000. It does make a sound when honing on it, but it's kind of a smooth gliding sound, and very consistent throughout the stroke. Is it lapped properly? I ask because if it's not perfectly flat then there will be extra pressure on some parts of the blade due to the high and low spots on the stone, causing a different sound.
If you're still a honing newbie, than perhaps you're having trouble keeping the blade perfectly flat on the hone throughout the stroke. When I was first learning I found this difficult, and as a result caused a not-so-smooth sound when honing. Perhaps this is why?

Some do, some don't. (It's easier to do it yourself and "know" they're flat...besides, if you use a grid you'll see that it's flat from the get-go and not waste much time. Because of this it's worth it.)
Then as you use them they "dish out" our get worn unevening...then you got lap 'em again.
