    Default Thuringian hone from Apex

    Hi All,

I spotted this thuringian stone the other day. Anyone know anything about it?

    Thanks

Not by the Apex brand but if the price is reasonable it would be nice to try out. Thuringan hones are from the same area where the Eschers were quarried. May be a good one to fit into the progression and if not you can get your money out of it in the classifieds. Lot of HADdicts out there.

Note it says: "Echter Thuringian" at the top line of the label.

Yes, I wonder what "true thuringian" really means since Thuringia is 6,243.7 sq mi. Was it one specific mine? If so then wouldn't they be all the same quality as Eschers? Or did Escher & Co have access to a special vein? ...

    Cheers,

I have two like yours and they are great hones. One I have shows the sedimentary layers on top and this hone cuts very fast and fine. The other has the striations parallel with the face and cuts as fast as the other thuringens i own but is more than capable for a final stage hone. Both are very hard stones and dont make much of a slurry, though I tend to never use slurry with any hone.

What is the grit size of Thuringian stones? I don't need exact number, but is it like Norton 8k or more like Chinese 12k?
    Regards.

Those that know natural stones say that you cannot give them a for sure grit rating the way you can a synthetic. You have to try the stone and see where it fits in the pecking order. However it seems that most of the Thuringan/Escher variety seem to fit into the 12K area more of less.
