Sorry to be disagreeable, but I have had good success with my Norton lapping stone. I have used it on the 4k/8k Norton and my double sided barber stones. No problem. I also do the lapping under running water.

I had one to start with and they work. On Lynn's DVD he shows the one he was using at the time so it must have worked for him. OTOH, dial up worked for me but I progressed to broadband and it works better. I sold my Norton flattening stone after buying a DMT D8C continuous diamond plate. It works better. Always under running water with a pencil grid on the stone.

I may pick up a DMT D8XX. I figure being coarser it may be faster. Then draw another grid and hit it with the D8C to smooth it out a bit. Less wear and tear on the D8C and using what DMT recommends for the primary lapping. I have to get off of here and go hone a razor.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I've used my norton lapping stone on the two norton combos I have (200/1k 4k/8k) and even my BBW and Coticule.

Thats exactly what I do. My harder hones always see the D8XX first (much faster).

Yeah, having to flatten a flattening stone is completely idiotic to me. What are you supposed to flatten it with? A cinder block?

OTOH, I have a DMT D8XX and D8C, and they are definitely my preferred tools for lapping. I also have a granite surface plate with 3M sandpaper, and I've had the same piece of paper for quite some time with it.... who knows?

If you need something really aggressive and don't want to get a DMT D8XX, go to Lowes and get some of the really heavy duty sandpaper belts meant for a 3" wide belt sander. It's wide and you can cut it to whatever length you want. P80 works for me....

I can't use automotive Wet/Dry sandpaper for too long. It wears out really quickly.
