I own three razors: a Robert Williams custom, Dovo carbon, and a Wacker stainless. Lynn has sharpened all three of them the first time.

The problem is when they go dull and I try to re-hone them. I have started each one with 5 strokes on the 4k and 5 on the 8k. Then I progress to 1/4k and 5/8k. Nada! Then I tried a pyramid based on 10/k progressing down. Still nada!!

Maybe a good question is, when a previously very sharp razor, honed by Lynn, gets dull, what should the first step be in re-honing it?

Actually, IMHO, My first line of defense is a pasted (cro2) flatbead hone, 20 passes, test shave, if more is needed, then barber hone, again, if more is needed, then coticule. By this time, it's usually dangerously sharp. I try to give it only what it needs. I'm a firm believer in not over honing. I'm also a firm believer in the abilities of the coticule. It's a very versatile hone IMO....

Others feel that way about the Nortons or Shaptons, or Eschers....It's all a matter of taste and opinion. Most will get you to the same spot...By the way, Stupid question time, Are your hones lapped? An uneven hone will give uneven results...
That stainless steel blade is a real pain to sharpen....IMO....

Yes, I lap the hones frequently and they appear to be in good shape. Maybe I should try the coticule more?
