Thanked: 433I found a coticule!
Just like the other post this week I found a Coticule combination stone (4"x1 3/4" yellow/blue) in my late parents junk drawer. I've lapped it with my Norton flattening stone and it does have the purple slurry so I'm pretty sure it's a a y/b stone.
What would be the best way to lap this? I'm not sure the Norton is the best choice, also I don't have the matching stones to make the slurry, what else could I use?

Great score! Always nice to find little treasures lying around.
Just follow the link in Startibartfast's post and you should be good to go.

I NEVER thought I would find anything like that in their things, as my father never used a straight as far as I know. It surprised the heck out of me to find it in a box full of kitchen utensils!!
I was about to search ebay for one. It really adds to my stash of hones (Norton 4k/8k, Japanese 1200, diamond 850 and some barber hones).

Maybe he didn't use it for a straight razor, just for knifes and such. Coticules aren't just for razors, they're apparently great for other things too! But I'll be damned if I let my beauties touch anything but a razor's edge...

Thanked: 278What a great find!
A DMT D4C might be good for you. Although it's only 4" by 7/8" it's quite cheap and could be used with care to lap your coticule and also for raising a slurry.
Just do the lapping under running water to stop slurry from stripping the diamond out.
I don't think they do a DMT D4X which is a shame, but the D4C will do the job just a bit slower.
Of course a 6" or 8" DMT will be more versatile if you want to spend more.

Congratulations! It is always nice to find hidden treasures, but this one I imagine is extra nice as it is both an excellent tool in its own right, and an unexpected keepsake from loved ones too.
Don't forget to post pictures!
