    Default Stupid honing question

    Hi Guys

Stupid question from newb learning to hone. I have a razor that the shoulder where it meets the heel along the lower (cutting) surface sticks out, in other words part of the shoulder shares the same horizontal line with the cutting edge of the blade. When honing, should this area be contacting the hone or just the cutting surface of the blade. The result seems to be scuffs, etc along areas halfway up the shoulder. My other razors I've been practicing on have different shaped blades so this hasn't yet been an issue for me. It seems if you hone it with only the cutting edge contacting the hone, you'll end up with a different bevel. Which is correct?

Thanks for all the great info.... I bow to you all....

Welcome to SRP ! If we are on the same page and I understand what you are saying then the stabilizing piece seen here is what you are referring to ? If so i leave that off of the hone and keep the edge/spine flat on the hone. Check out the SRP Wiki here. If you go there and scroll down there is an abundance of info on everything straight razor related.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yes, my apologies for the error in terminology, that is what I was trying to describe - the stabilizer sticks out further than the edge of the blade and apparently should not be on the hone surface. I have been studying the Wiki information and videos for a while. Thanks!!

When that shoulder sticks out the way you describe, it's a pain to hone. As Jimmy pointed out, you just have to be careful to keep it off the hone. Unfortunately, that protrusion will also impact your stropping. You will have to be equally careful about placing the shoulder just past the edge of the strop. I shave with a different razor every day and every now and then I will take a first strop stroke and notice it doesn't feel right--invariably it's a shoulder dragging along the strop.

The shoulder can be ground to correct this, but don't attempt it unless you know what you are doing. If you overheat a razor you will ruin it.

By the way, you're going to have to try a lot harder to come up with a truly stupid honing question. Your first attempt wasn't even close!

Welcome to SRP! I don't think there are any stupid hone questions. There is a lot to learn, but fortunately there are plenty of patient experts on this site happy to instruct/advise, plus a wealth of great knowledge in the Wiki.
