The glittery bits might be specks of mica or quartz?

    Regards,

If I'm not mistaken beenpickin had a couple of large coticule like stones on ebay.I believe, if it was him, that he said he thought they were coticules. They were good sized stones.

Bart would probably know if it was feasible to have a coticule with no backing stone. He has found them in old quarries in Belgium and he has made the pilgrimage to Ardennes.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I believe I've seen a coticule without dark backing as well. If the stone surface looked like a coticule and didn't have a backing, or if it had a typical backing and had the questionable surface, then I'd be less willing to bet against Chris. It's the combination of the two that make me wonder about it. I'm not confident that it's not a coticule, I just have doubts about it.

Any speculation about the second one?

Yes, I had sold a couple and kept a couple of what I felt were the best. Not having tried them all, it turns out I should have kept one the one I had been using for years. I assumed they were all the same but sold one that was especially soft and quickly produced a thick slurry. The two I kept are slow slurry producers but quick to produce swarf.
Last week I picked up a couple more stones, one bundled with a bonded coticule. Like Memorials' hone, these were filthy grungy and one was obviosly broken from a larger hone. I brought up a burr on a large carbon Dexter simitar and finished it one of the small hones. In just a few minutes it was arm shaving sharp.

Memorial. what does the second hone look like wet? Splotchy?

hey those hones look very similiar to mines, the second one looks brownish when not wet it currently looks whiter then normal due to the dmt scratches but once it smooths down it looks normal, the crazy part about that hone is that it is not as hard as the coticule looking one, leaves an edge which is pretty sharp but looks hazy and has some spots on it and leaves a white slurry when lapped. The coticule looking one leaves a a milky looking slurry and it does look very smooth whatever it is it is a REALLY good finishing hone it has given me some of the smoothest and best shaves so it is one of my prized ones if not my favorite. I think what I am going to next is buy some scrap metal and polish it using several stones so you guys can judge better. Hope this helps thanks.
