Thread: Swaty eBay Win And Questions

I grabbed this Swaty on eBay for under $25. FRANZ SWATY HONE - RAZOR SHARPENING STONE - AUSTRIA - eBay (item 380109363183 end time Mar-15-09 18:18:09 PDT) My question is, how should I prepare it for use? Does it need cleaning and if so, how?

Almost all of the old Swatys I have were in great need of lapping. If you lap it to flat, there may be residual chips. There is no need to lap so far as to remove all of the chips. Just use some sandpaper to smooth out the edges of the chips. Once you're done lapping it, it also helps to round off the edges as well to reduce risk of blade damage during honing.

Yup, that will do it. I prefer my DMTXX but sandpaper will work if you have it on a flat surface. Make sure you keep a steady stream of water going and don't use a lot of pressure.

If I remember correctly, there were nearly 4 million Swatys made. Never bid as if any particular Swaty is the one you just gotta have. More will always come!
