A follow-up:
After a pause of a few days, I've been honing almost nightly for over the past week. As suddenly as I seemed to forget how to hone, I seem to have re-learned. Three razors last night, and three more tonight, all as sharp as I've ever been able to get any razor. Bam - bam - bam, one right after the other, different sizes and grinds.
I really wish I had some insight I could share about where I went wrong before, or what I'm doing right again now. I've started honing entirely while holding the hone in my hand, with minimal water, and very light pressure. Maybe I just got the hang of this style now, as I started trying this last week out of desperation.
But maybe it's just that I started honing frequently enough again that I got the feel of it back. I've figured out that I have no inherent knack or skill for this the way that some do, no way to force it to happen. But all my favorites are now back in absolute top form again, and I won't be laying off honing for several weeks at a time anymore!
Thanks again for the tips and encouragement. Good times.

That's happened a couple of times. Strange thing is, whenever I lap my stone I learn how to hone again.
