Thanked: 398DMT Extra Fine (1200)
Hey guys,
I just bought a DMT 1200 for bevel setting and was wondering how many passes do you think it would take to set a bevel on a razor? I know the answer can vary a lot, but I'm trying to get an idea of how fast the diamond stone cuts relative to a waterstone for example.

I asked the same question in chat the other night. Answer was somewhere in the vicinity of 50 on a really dull razor.

Depends on how dull the blade is, etc. I usually do 50 and watch how evenly the marker ink goes away, then do the TNT.

Thanked: 398I still don't have mine but it should be here soon. How do you like yours?
I'm hoping to use that followed by a belgian blue + coticule
I've heard of people breaking it in and other people saying that they come already good to go.

Thanked: 398Thanks Ray!
How many more passes do you do after the TNT, I know it dulls the blade a little so..?

Thanked: 156Can't really answer that question. I do it until all the marker goes away and then I do 20 more. But it really takes some experience to get it right. I love mine, its great for bevel setting on slightly dull razors. Breadknifed razors OTOH... I think I need a D8XX.... :| For lapping too.
edit: only joking about the D8xx for grinding metal. Sorta.... have a d8c.

Thanked: 398I'm not sure I'll use t for lapping since I heard that my belgian blue and coticule don't need lapping that often.
What exactly do you mean by break it in? I don't have a chisel...would big kitchen knife work as well?
What kind of motion should I do with the knife on it? I don't want to ruin it either...

When it passes the TNT, that is when the razor grabs my nail tight and even along the entire blade, then I know the bevel is set. I stop then and move on to the next grit. I usually use the blue and coticule after that, like you plan to. The TNT dulls the edge if you use it after honing beyond 4k.
If you haven't yet, watch heavyduty's honing video. Lots of good info there.Last edited by RayG; 03-22-2009 at 03:17 AM.
