Thanked: 286Factory bevel
I've read articles on razors for example dovo. And people say they have had reset factory bevel. How would i no if i had to reset factory bevel on a new razor .I have many razors new and old i have another one on it's way in the post.I must say that new ones have never been shave ready has could be but not far off so i have just honed on hones untuill they do shave never had aproblem apart from with a bismark. So basicly what test do i have to do to no the bevel is ok and if not how can i tell. I persume the marker test would help me any help would be apreciated .

The marker test is exactly what I would do. Just paint a bit on the edge, do a few strokes on a fine hone, and see if it removes it all right to the edge. Apparently Dovo is known for lifting the spine when grinding the bevel, so the bevel would effectively be steeper just like adding layer(s) of tape to the spine.

I'm no expert but after accumulating a lot of razors my routine is to do a TPT. If it passes for the length of the blade I look at it under magnification and if there are no micro chips or what have you I strop it and shave. If it doesn't pass the TPT I go to the TNT. In that case pass or fail I will put the marker on it to see what stroke works and begin to hone it. I always tape the spine with one layer of tape when I hone so I figure I may have to re-set the bevel if and when i do hone a new or used razor.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 286I don't personaly use tape i no some people do i just don't .So check blade with my 30k loop tpt if its sticky all the way along the edge strop and test. If it does'nt shave to my liking marker the edge and hone on coticule if maker is removed full of the bevel that means the bevel is good and does'nt need resetting? JUst fine tune razor as normal and ajust stroke to get the whole egde onthe hone.If marker is left along the very edge of bevel that would mean rest bevel right? posibly with 4k or at worst 1k.

IMO if the marker isn't removed it means that I have to alter my stroke to a rolling x or maybe a heel leading 45 degree angle like Lynn recommends for some razors. It doesn't necessarily mean that I have to reset the bevel. Talking about a new razor. On all razors I go by what randydance told me,"The edge should be free of nicks and the bevel should go all the way to the edge. If you are using a hand held microscope then the bevel will appear as one color, if there are two bevels, old and new, then the light reflects off the bevel at different angles and appears as two colors. The scratch pattern should also be uniform for both the length and width of the bevel. When you have that then move on to the 4000, but not before". So if the razor meets the above I figure the bevel is set enough to sharpen. If it doesn't then I go ahead and set the bevel.

If there is still marker at the very edge that means that the stone isn't touching the very edge of the razor, i.e. the angle is steeper. So yes, you'd have to reset the bevel then. You could reset the bevel with either the 4k or 1k, depending how much work you have to do. I usually do all my bevels on the 1k, but if the marker test is showing that the bevel is ALMOST right, then maybe 4k would do it.

Thanked: 4942Guys,
I have honed thousands of new Dovo's out of the box and can't remember ever having to set a new bevel on one. Normally a trip through your regular honing/polishing process is all you need.
