    Default norton lapping stone

Hi all, well, as a newbie I'm starting to get into hones. Currently I have a Chinese 12k that I lap on sandpaper. But I've been thinking about getting a Norton 4000/8000 and possibly a Norton 220/1000 to try my hand at restoring some blades as well as for general use on all other blades and knives. My question is, what do people think about the Norton lapping stone (here is the one I'd get, it doesn't say it's a norton, but it looks like it is no less Truing Stone for Water Stones - Lee Valley Tools). I've ruled out lapping Norton stones with paper because I've heard it can be chancy, and I don't know if I want to spend the extra money on a DMT 8C.

So, what do people think of the norton SiC lapping stone (I'd be using it only on the nortons)? Also, I've heard it sometimes needs to be relapped itself; how frequent is this? I don't plan on putting much wear on the hones as I don't think I'd use them too much; but if I'm going to need to relap the lapping stone itself with any regularity on a DMT I might as well just get the DMT from the start and forget the norton for lapping.

Thanks for any and all advice!

I like the Norton lapping stone. For only $25 it's convenient compared to sandpaper. I relap the lapping stone every few months on 220 grit sandpaper. I use the DMT as a base to lap it (I don't care for for the surface left by the DMT).

Ah, I was under the impression that sandpaper wasn't good to lap synthetic 'stones' like the nortons; but you've had no problems lapping the flattening stone with sandpaper?

Also, how are the norton lapping stones for other, non-synthetic and non-Norton stones?

I've had no problems using sandpaper to lapp synthetic stones. More importantly, others who hone a lot more razors than I do, also use sandpaper only for lapping.

I've used the Norton lapping stone to lapp my coticule and other natural stones. It works fine, but the difference in size between the stones makes me a little nervous. That's probably just my OCDishness.

The DMT 1200 is only $11 more than the Norton 220/1000. I can't imagine you needing a 220 for any normal work, and the DMT is guaranteed to be flat and can lap your other stones. Why buy a lapping stone that needs to be lapped itself?

It's good to know that's possible. Sounds a lot more reliable than the trick I read about using a concrete block to flatten the flattening stone.

For the sake of the lapping stone, don't use it on barber hones or hard naturals. Hard stones such as these will trash it rapidly.

    +1, what Gary said.
