To me that looks like a killer Rock! I for one prefer belgians with "figure" i.e. the red lines. The edge might be cut less than ideal but it can be reshaped if desired.

Many coticules are sold as odd shaped bouts and that has no effect on honing. One member created a video in which he uses a small bout. He has used it on many many razors. I'd suggest a google seach for LX Emergency razor honing. That should turn up the video. It might be in the help files on this site but Icannot find the files at this time.

I have watched your video a couple of times. It looks like a fully functional Coticule to me. I has great patterning. I suspect that they tried to cut a large one out of the original raw chunk of Coticule, because of that nice figuring.
The crack in the side is a severe cosmetic flaw, and also the bottom of the yellow part was less than perfect, hence the thick glue line.
    How much did you pay?

GregJDS, I really understand that you have some concerns about this Coticule stone but you there's nothing to worry about!
To me it looks like a perfect Coticule stone.

Coticule comes from very small veins, these veins do have colorizations and many different patterns, so all this is perfect normal and doesn't have any influence on honing.
It's the quality of the Coticule that matters not the looks of it!!

About the chip glued back in: I'm pretty sure that it isn't glued back in. I think it's just a little natural crack.
Don't worry about it it isn't going to fall out! Most of these little side cracks are closed at the inside. I can imagine that they look bad at the outside but once again nothing to worry about!
When producing Coticule stones all that matters to us is the surface of the stones!
The only stones that have perfect sides are the Kosher stones. Coticule Selected and Standard stones can have these little cracks at the side of the stone.

About the thick line of glue: Coticule rocks are rough when glued to the black slate. We don't polish the Coticule plate before gluing it on the black slate. There are Coticule stones with a perfect straight line of glue between the Coticule and the black slate but many of them don't have a nice straight line!

So in my opinion you have a perfect normal Coticule stone which will serve you many many years.

You can return it back to the vendor for an exchange but ask in advance if he got any other Coticule stones.
Right now we are completely sold out and we are still pumping the quarry before production can even start. So I don't have any larger stones to ship to any vendor around the world!

I think it is rather beautiful. I would sand off the offending crack if you don't like it, it is possible it could get in the way in about 20 years time after it has been laped many many times
If you don't mind telling, How much was the stone?
    Nice rock M
