Thread: Taped Spine Question

I have a quick question related to my last post (re: coticule touch-ups) and I was wondering what you guys think. After my trip to the stone, in which I taped the spine with 1 layer, I gave my razor 10 laps on a chrome pasted paddle strop without the tape. I know that you take the tape off before the final linen/leather stropping, but are you "supposed" to leave the tape on for the chrome paddle stage?

I forgot to mention that the resulting shave went great despite taking the tape off for the chrome stropping. I just don't know if my edge would have been slightly better if I left the tape on.

Yes, to ensure that the chrome is hitting the edge rather than the shoulder of the bevel.

Technically, I think Utopian is right. Although, the leather has some give in it and the electrical tape really only changes the bevel angle a small amount. Those two things in combination may mean your CrOx is hitting the right spot.

Thanks guys. To be honest I didn't really consider it until I'd taken the tape off and done half a lap. I figured my face would tell me if it was wrong. At least the shave was great, and that's all that matters!

You have both right answers LOL

Technically on a paddle type strop you should leave the tape on, realistically it doesn't really matter....
I would not make that same statement for somebody using a Balsa strop though, until I proved it to myself....

At one time I decided to take a taped back to the hone. Not that it was such a big deal to re-tape it, but after that I began to leave the tape on until I was satisfied with the test patch shave.

I AM right!

Actually I do agree that there may be enough give in the strop to still polish the edge despite the tape being removed. However, since you already have the tape on the razor during the honing, leaving it on during the chrome ox GUARANTEES the edge will be polished.

And I agree with Utopian... He is right to agree with me that he is right about me being right to agree with him. However, whether I was right to agree with him about whether it is right to write that I was right to write about the right way to strop with CrOx is still contentious in my mind.
