After reading some more on the Spyderco. They are reputed to be hard to lap. What I have been doing is lapping a Norton flattening stone with my DMT coarse and then using that to lap my other hones.

I don't know if the lapping stone is hard enough to work on the ceramic Spyderco.

It also looks like I can get the King Ice Bear for $24 to fit between DMT 1000 and the DMT 8000.

I can then see about hones (eg Thuringian, Japanese, coticule, etc) later.

OTOH, I suppose I could make the case that buying the best saves me money in the long run.
