It takes approximately 20 laps on a Norton 1k to re-set a bevel either direction with tape or without tape.... ON A RE-TOUCH That's it, really....

DO NOT confuse what I just said with setting initial bevels.... That is a different subject...

Edit: I guess I better specify 1 layer of tape

    Glen.

If My razor was originally honed without tape. and i only have a touchup stone, could i tape it and then as i slowly use the touchup hone to hone with the tape will it eventually go from a double bevel to a reset a single bevel? Or would i need to reset the bevel right away with tape? Just an Idea I had because I know lynn honed my first razor without tape and I plan to retouch it myself

I honestly would not tape it now, you can re-touch that razor, for years just the way it is... Now if you decide to actually get into "honing" then you can take it any direction you want.....

I realize that many people have many theories, but from 1982-1999 I had one hone and kept 2 razors shaving for allllllllllllllllll those years just doing the X pattern I was taught the first day of straight shaving once a week for each razor that's the way I was told to do it. One (some kind of 7x2 super hard, super fine) hone and one #835 Illinois strop....

BTW I still have both of those....

    A big +1.
It takes very little time switching between taped honing and untaped honing.

Erictski: I'm not saying that you should do it, but you could definitely do your touch ups with one layer of tape added to the spine. Over many touch-ups the secondary bevel introduced by the tape would eventually replace the initial bevel. The first touch-ups would go quite fast, because the hone would work on only a very narrow secondary bevel. Going in the other direction (touching up untaped on a taped bevel) won't be possible. Based upon your post, I believe that you have an accurate enough picture in your mind, to know why.

That may be correct for your honing sesions this year, or next year etc. But what will the spine look like after 40+ years of being dragged across an abbrasive surface week after week? My razors may be in my possesion now, but I plan to pass them on to my son, and then to his son and so on until they are of little use other than to hang on a wall as a reminder of great-great-great grandpa. I'm with Dups on this one; tape to protect the spine and, if necessary, create a double bevel.
