Default Norton 4/8 or Super stone 5/8 before Superstone 12k

I have a Naniwa Super 12k polishing stone and am wondering if the norton 4k/8k is good for before the 12k or if I should stay with the same brand and get the 5k and 8k Naniwa super stones.

I use norton 4k/8k before the super 12k and my razors somehow become sharp. I think you are good.

Thanks...just unsure. It would cut down on clutter with only 1 more stone and a little on cost.

I am a huge fan of single grit hones. I don't like combo hones except for barber hones, whose use is entirely different. When you have a combo stone, every time you flip it over you have to be careful to wipe off any debris/crud the underside picked up.

The advantage of the single hones, as opposed to the combo hones, is that each one can refresh the other. The 4 and 8 would be rubbed together, and then the 8 and 12 would be rubbed together.

You can get single grit Nortons (I have 7) just like the single grit Naniwas. On the other hand, you can also get a combo Naniwa.
