yes it is confusing but this I will tell you the stone you are looking at the Aoto is a pretty coarse stone. It's no finisher.

The aoto I got from ebay was better than the one I got from hida tool fwiw
that could change at every toss; with these you just never know.
What are you used too?
I bought these so I could play with a natural middle stone. If you are not looking for play time i suggest you get a 4k (or thereabouts) synthetic

Thanked: 2well, for the time being, i have an appx. 130 year old VERY soft coticule combo that i use for bevel setting and varying degrees of sharpening and a pretty hard coti-combo for varying degrees of polishing and a chinese 12k as a finisher.
i just thought the japanese stone on the bay was beautiful and i was wondering if i could fit in in somewhere....plus i just kinda wanted to play with it.
i guess im looking for just a ballpark,...perhaps it would compare to a bbw with heavy slurry ?? 1200 grit?? less??....thanks everyone !!

I haven't used bbw much. The aoto is generally/probably coarser; softer.
Very easy to make thick slurry.
It fits into the middle-you can shave off it, and set a bevel if you really needed to, but it its better bridging the gap between the two
