Thanked: 488Swedish "Skinny" Razor
I got a Swedish razor off of ebay that I had no idea was so thin. In fact I've never seen one this thin. Even with two pieces of tape on the spine it still measures 1/8th inch across the spine! The blade shape is nice but how in the heck do you hone a blade this thin!
I started with two pieces of tape on the spine and that isn't to bad but it's difficult to figure what angle is needed to set a good bevel on the edge.
Any ideas from you pros? Also being that thin it does have some tendency to flex. Oh yes it's also a wedge------
Thanks!
Phil

I wonder if maybe it's a frameback that the frame fell off of?
When I was honing up a microtome, I taped a toothpick to the flat side, and that worked pretty well. Maybe tape a toothpick to each side?

Thanked: 488I don't think it was. There are no marks of any kind at the top of the blade to indicate anything having been attached to it. That and the top of the blade has a curve to it and I believe all the framebacks are straight across on top. Now I remember you saying you taped a toothpick on one you worked on. I'll give that a shot. Thanks!!!!
I need to get a pic of it and post it later today.

Thanked: 346It's a frameback that is missing the spine piece, they did make these with curved spines so that doesn't mean anything. I've got several of these razors, and have seen at least one with a loose spine.

After thinking about it and doing some searching on the internet this may very well be a frameback. One I found had a flat piece as the back of the blade. Most I've seen are rounded but this one was indeed flat and was folded over the top of the blade. It was also Swedish. From the pic you can see the notch at the end of the blade which I think indicates the seating spot for the frame piece. I may have the terms wrong but you get the idea. I guess I can always make a piece with brass maybe.

Yep, thats a frameback alright. You just need the other piece.

Thanked: 488That's what I get for not asking for a picture of the top of the blade. The pictures they posted made it look larger than it is and a bit blurry. No big deal since it was like $9 and postage was free. I think I'll make a project out of it and make a piece to configure it as a frameback again. I just need a small amount of brass in the right thickness. In fact it may look pretty good with a contrasting metal. As I said earlier the one I found online had a flat frame on it which will be easier to fabricate and fit.
Thanks guys!
